Scruff’s Top 5

This past weekend I was a busy busy man, only two events but lots of prep to be done. On Friday night I was back in Sioux City at The Firehouse, I really have been blessed with the opportunity, and i’m glad they love my style there. On Top of that I had Sheldon’s Adult Prom on Saturday to wrap up my weekend of gigs. Both events were a blast, I had fun interacting with the crowds and learning a thing or two in the process.

Friday Night I made my way down to Sioux City to spin at The Firehouse. I always look forward to playing here, the staff is always friendly and whether the place is packed or not, the crowd is always eager to get their groove on. As the DJ you know you can expect to play the hottest tracks available on the charts, but that get’s old so I dug a little deeper into my crate of tunes to switch it up a bit. I wanted to play popular tracks and keep the dance floor rocking, that’s always the #1 goal, I just wanted to go back to the songs we had forgotten after not hearing them on the radio as much. Now, I didn’t want to go too far back, the audience’s age group has begun shift and the requests are only going back but so far. So to prepare for this night I looked up the Top hits from 2000 on, eliminated all of the tracks i’m used to playing from this era, and see what songs were left over. I knew I couldn’t just take all of my top tracks out of rotation, but substituting songs when I didn’t have any requests made it more challenging for myself and kept it fresh. I never want people to come see me play and just know my playlist.

Saturday Night I wasn’t too far from my house, I played at the Sheldon Event Center for Sheldon’s 2nd Annual Adult Prom. Over 150 people bought tickets to the event, and all the money raised went to Shop With A Cop Sheldon. I had a blast playing tunes for the home crowd, my biggest task of the evening was bridging the age gap to keep everyone happy and dancing. We had graduates from the 70’s- 2015, a great variety of people, this was great for it only being the 2nd year. Throughout the night I played hits from Bob Seger, Michael Jackson, Usher, Salt n Peppa, and countless others. We partied hard from 8- midnight, with people dancing, drinking, and taking photos in the photo booth; all for a good cause. I can’t wait for the next one, hopefully this will continue to grow and many different organizations can benefit from a night of dancing.
