Scruff’s Top 5

This past weekend was nothing but fun, I had the chance to play at the Orange City, IA bridal show, the Firehouse, Icon Lounge in Sioux Falls, and got the opportunity to expand my reach on the radio. 2019 has been an amazing journey thus far. I can’t believe the potential that this year has with a lil bit of hard work and dedication.

Friday night I made my way up to Icon Lounge in Sioux Falls, SD for my friend Adam’s taco birthday party. Adam rented out Icon for a few hours and served tacos in 90’s vintage apparel. You saw Space Jam jersey’s,fanny packs, overalls, and Starter jackets. The party went from 8-12 and had 3 DJ’s on deck, I was fortunate to be one of them. It had been almost 2 years since I last played a track at Icon, I was glad to be back on the stage. Since it was a 90’s themed party I tried to stick to the 90’s early 2000’s with my track selection. I played a lil ODB, Salt n Peppa, and Mariah Carey to keep the crowd singing. It was a fun event and i’m glad those guys thought of me.

Saturday was an early morning. I had to get to Orange City for their Better Together 2019 Bridal and Fashion showcase. Stovetop Productions was in charge of all the music for the event and that meant keeping the ladies and their entourages moving and grooving towards vendors. This is our second year being the preferred DJ’s for the event. We really enjoy working with the staff at the Prairie View Event Center in Orange City. After the event was over I made my way home for lunch and a nap before packing up and making my way to the Firehouse for the evening. It was a pretty busy place down in Sioux City. It’s always fun to play at the Firehouse, but I really enjoy it when the place is packed. One thing I enjoy is getting the different requests from the crowd. It’s hard keeping up with all the new trends and artists, so getting requests keep my library up to date. I’ve been listening to so much house music, I can’t just neglect the other genres I need to know in order to be proficient at my job.

Sunday was my day of rest and relaxation. I laid around and listened to tunes, watched some television, and worked on some production. It was a good day for sure. It was especially nice after a long weekend, not to mention I was going to have my radio show broadcasted across seas the following week so that was exciting. I don’t know how it happened but, right place and right time surely seems appropriate. I was on Facebook checking a DJ community group i’m a part of when I came across a post asking about radio shows. I answered the thread and informed the topic creator that I had been on air for 3 years, that turned into a conversation about having my show aired on another station. Of course I was interested, in my mind I see it as another way to find fans, and spread the love of dance music. Well after going over details I found out that the station was based out of Cork County, Ireland. Needless to say I became very excited and hopped on the chance to have the show played in Europe. So starting next week i’ll have the show aired on Wednesday’s and Saturday’s. Once in the U.S. and once in Ireland, I can’t begin to express how grateful I am for this. Just goes to show that hard work does pay off, I can’t wait to see how much this helps me grow. Not only as a DJ, but in general. I know having my show on another station brings a little more responsibility to my plate, but if I remain focused I know that I can excel. 2019 is looking like a year for opportunity and blessings, can’t wait to see what else is in store.
